I recently began reading a new release novel, a mainstream fantasy, the author will remain nameless, but suffice it to say the author is well known and has a proven track record for bestsellers. In fact I absolutely loved one of this authors series I read it more than once.
BUT as I mentioned, I started reading this new work, which is the first in a new series, and I'm not wrapped in it.. The basic storyline is great, I can see it will be an excellent series, the writing is fantastic, BUT the author is using words from an "ancient language" within the dialogue, so much so that I need to keep flipping to the "terms" page in the back of the book. Annoying much? I can hear you say "You'll memorize them and it will be all good", that maybe so, in time, but 11 or 12 different "terms" in one page just makes my head want to explode, its goes so far as feeling like studying a medical journal.. I think it can quickly take a story from being enchanting to educationally taxing.. Thumbs down to Ancient Languages no-one understands without a glossary..

"...My Art is that of the imagination and the mysterious, I try to find a mystery or a secret in everything I see, so when I begin a piece it becomes its own entity, and is rarely what I first imagined it would be.. But that is the beauty of my work, it creates itself, I merely put it together..." The 12 Apostles series is a work in progress that will be the relaunch of the JustinJames name in the art world of Australia, stay tuned.
I agree. One of my favorite authors does that with a very long series that I love. But about half way through the series they started printing an appendix. The last book I bought has 35 pages dedicated to the appendix for glossary and chants. A word, that can be understood through context, thrown in occasionally is one thing. But after too many ancient/foreign words I start to hear the "blah blah blah" from the adults dialogue in the "Peanuts" cartoons.
ReplyDeleteI just find it ruins what could easily be a fantastic read.. A shame really..:(
